| A walk from Ashdown
Forest Centre across the golf course to the Ashdown Forest Golf Hotel
and on through Broadstone Warren and so back to the car park. Or alternatively**
from a parking point at the top of Chapel
Lane in Forest Row. From the Broadstone car park there are glorious
views northwards across Forest Row in the Medway Valley.
East Grinstead Church tower can be seen on the skyline to the west,
on a clear day the North Downs are visible, and eastwards there is Hartfield
and views into Kent. A visit to the Forest Centre will certainly add to
the pleasure of the walk.
Starting from Broadstone car park and picnic site 150 yards to the east of the Forest Centre, (not the Forest Centre car park) which is about one mile east of Wych Cross on the road to Coleman’s Hatch. If you choose to start the walk at the alternative parking point your instructions start at the paragraph marked **. At the start of the walk from Broadstone car park your direction will be eastwards, more or less parallel to the road to Coleman’s Hatch for three quarters of a mile, then north and north-west to the Ashdown Forest Golf Hotel, then turning south towards Tompsett’s Bank and back through the Warren, via the Broadstone Warren Scout Camp. At the far end of the Broadstone car park go left down a wide track which bears right to join a bridleway going eastwards. Turn right along it. In three-quarters of a mile to the right is Townsend car park. Turn left down to a seat on your left and opposite the seat you will see a single birch tree next to a very narrow track. Follow this track downhill through the heather, this will bring you to the right hand side of the 11th tee and the Bertie Sinclair seat. Go straight ahead following the golfers track until you reach the fairway.
Follow the fairway downhill and past the 12th tee keeping to the right
hand side until you arrive at the 13th tee.
Continue bearing left up to the 13th green and across a stony drive leading to Little Broadstone Farm. Now enter a wide track with a stone footpath sign at the entrance. This leads to the 14th tee but only follow this track to where it begins to curve right. Opposite this point the hedge on the right hand side forms a corner. You take the narrow path opposite (on your left). This runs downhill and soon crosses a stream followed by a footbridge over another stream. Continue straight ahead uphill to pass an extended cottage, and out
onto the golf course again.
As you ascend the slight hill, the red brick and white paintwork of the Ashdown Forest Golf Hotel will appear ahead of you, slightly to the left. Several small paths lead to it across the fairway and alongside the tennis courts. **(Alternative starting point).
Walk along, keeping to the edge until you come to a green, when you cross over to a gravel track to avoid walking on the green. Continue in the same direction between greens, then houses until the track ends with trees and a fairway beyond. Pause at the edge of the greens and look ahead down wide fairways to trees in the distance. This is Broadstone Warren where you are going. It is not wise to walk across the grass to these trees! If you go to
the right here, skirting straggly trees, you will reach another stony track
going left slightly uphill past a water tap.
When you are nearly at the top of the rise, a wide grassy path leads
to a green on your right.
Back to the main path. Go right of the tee with a deep gully on the right and on to Greenhall Toll Clump. Approximately 50 yards after the sign “Greenhall Toll Clump” turn left onto a small path leading downhill to a stile. Cross the stile and down to tall pine trees. Bear right alongside a wire fence and up to tarmac drive and a hut over
on the left. This is the main entrance into Broadstone
Warren Scout Camp.
As you approach the cottage there is a hedge and track to the left which will take you up to the main road. Follow the road left (Beware of traffic - there a grass verge for most of the way.) to the Forest Centre. A footpath parallel to the road goes from the Forest Centre car park and Broadstone car park is just beyond. Walk route: "Printable map" |
